Lily Tomlin will return as secretary on 'West Wing'

by John Graves

Lesbian comic Lily Tomlin will appear in

at least 13 episodes of West Wing next season. Tomlin first appeared on the NBC White House drama as an applicant seeking to fill the shoes of the president's late secretary.

Tomlin's character, Deborah Fidererwhich staffers pronounced "Fiddler" until she corrected them-was recommended for the position by the president's assistant Charlie Young (Dulé Hill). It seems she had already been a White House secretary, until she was fired for getting Charlie his job.

But, as last season's finale ended, the interview had gone poorly, and it looked like she would not be back. Now it seems she will.

Rosie's got a new, short 'do

Rosie O'Donnell, sporting a new and very short haircut, was on hand at a party to celebrate Caroline Rhea's new role as host of the talk show O'Donnell is leaving, USA Today columnist Jeannie Williams reports.

O'Donnell also said her partner Kelli Carpenter is expected to give birth to a baby girl in December, which the couple will name Vivian.

As to the new hairstyle, O'Donnell told People magazine, "Before I started [my TV talk show], this was pretty much me, short hair." O'Donnell said she was "going for an '80s look."

"""

"It's 'Church of the Poison Mind,' she said, referring to a hit song by Boy George, whose musical Taboo she will produce on Broadway.

Ellen's book club?

Simon & Schuster will publish a new book of comic essays by Ellen DeGeneres next fall, just in time to help promote the lesbian comic's new syndicated daytime TV talk show.

'Creek' may get gay professor

The producers of Dawson's Creek are casting five new characters for the show's sixth season, including a new college professor who may be gay.

Proud of his Melrose years

Actor Doug Savant talked to Soap Opera Weekly about playing gay Matt Fielding on Melrose Place from 1992 to 1997.

"I'm proud of the work that I did and the character I played [and how it affected] the history of gay characters on television," Savant said. "The show was a huge blessing in my life. I met my wife (Laura Leighton) on the show. It was all a great experience." Gay debate, but no gay debaters

A lesbian "kiss-in" at a WNBA game was the topic of WJW Channel 8's Fox Unplugged in Cleveland a few weeks ago.

Lily Tomlin

Lesbian fans of the New York Liberty, who say team management ignores them although they are major supporters, stood and smooched during breaks in the nationallytelevised August 2 game.

Unfortunately, Fox 8 had no openly gay panelists for their show. The debate was dominated by Powell Caesar, a homophobic former Call and Post columnist who now spreads his bigoted views via a biweekly column in the suburban Cleveland Sun newspapers.

Caesar started off the debate by shouting his claim that "It's a choice, not a life," and daring the other panelists to challenge him. The other, normally sympathetic, panelists chickened out and made only halfhearted attempts to see the point of view of the lesbian protesters.

Perhaps they were cowed by the fact that he was old, black and loud but I'm also old and black and I say, "Powell, you're full of it."

I don't know about you, but I'm pretty tired of watching straight people debating what to do about gays-it's as insulting as watching white people debate about black issues. Write to Fox 8 News and tell them to include a gay person on the panel the next time they debate a gay issue. Lesbian duo, or hetero male fantasy? A video for All the Things She Said by Tatu, a hot new girl-pop group out of Moscow, features the group's members, 17year-old Julie Volkova and 18-year-old Lena Katina, "holding hands and kissing while a wall of throbbing electronic beats, spectral keyboards and buzzing guitar whirl around the groping gals," according to a report on MTV.com.

The song, with lyrics like, "When they stop and stare don't worrying me/'Cause I'm feeling for her what she's feeling for me/ I

can try to pretend, I can try to forget/ But it's driving me mad/ Going out of my head," like many others on the groups' upcoming U.S. album, is about young lesbian love.

"We are singing about our love. Love between girl and girl," Katina said.

The report says Tatu's "visualssuggestive photos, performances in panties and tiny tank tops-are what has helped the group sell over a million copies of their 2001 Russian album, 200 Po Vstrechnoy, which translates to 200 Kilometers an Hour in the Wrong Lane." Tatu's image has been carefully crafted by their producer and manager Ivan Shapovalov, a former psychologist and advertising executive. Some say the image is designed to cater to straight men, not lesbians.

The two young women have not actually come out, but information released to the press includes things like how they insist on a double bed in their hotel rooms.

Different wedding pictures

Doctors on the cable medical show Strong Medicine (Lifetime, Sunday 9 pm) had a surprise for a just-married gay couple they were treating. The two men had breathed carbon monoxide that had entered their honeymoon suite.

But they found it odd that they were shown into the room where MRIS are performed. Why is magnetic resonance imaging-used to see tumors and internal injuries--needed for CO poisoning, they asked. The doctors surprised the couple by allowing the two to get into the MRI together saying, "Welcome to the honeymoon!"
